Sreeja urged the central and state governments to do everything possible to bring the students back home.

“We are in a bunker, two floors below the ground. We can neither hear the sound of bomb blasts nor can we see anything outside. There is no power, but we are safe,” told Reddy Nomula Satya Sreeja of Visakhapatnam Hindu She was speaking in a voice choked with emotion while speaking on a WhatsApp call from war-torn Ukraine on Thursday night.

Ms. Sreeja is pursuing her first year course in medicine at Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) in Ukraine. His father R Arjun Rao is a businessman and mother Varalakshmi is a homemaker. Ms. Varalakshmi wept when this reporter called her on her mobile.

“We were told initially that chartered flights to India would be operated. Later, we came to know that they were cancelled. Our university authorities have assured us of our safety, but our parents in India are worried. We want the Government of India and the Government of Andhra Pradesh to do everything possible to take us back home,” Ms. Sreeja said.

“There are about 2,000 Indians in our university, including around 700 students from two Telugu states. We were given breakfast in the morning, but they only gave us water bottles. We have biscuits,” Ms Sreeja said when asked about the condition of the Indian students.

“MS. Sreeja had joined the university in Ukraine on December 8, 2021. She told us that she is safe in a bunker,” said her younger sister, Sushma, who is pursuing her intermediate.
