On Wednesday, VNSGU Vice-Chancellor KN Chavda claimed that some officials of the university have proposed to organize a one-day Garba event. “The organizing team did not tell me that the police had refused permission for the event,” Chavda said.
Some members of the organizing team had gone to the Umra police station to get permission from the police. But the police refused permission citing a government notification banning such events.
Government officials have only allowed sherry garba, banning large garba events. In violation of the notification, a huge program was organized right in front of Chavda’s official residence.
Chavda had gone to meet City Police Commissioner Ajay Tomar to discuss the matter on Wednesday, two days of drama unfolded. Senior city police officials told Chavda that he could not allow any garba event even inside the university campus in violation of the government’s public notification.
Earlier, VNSGU registrar Jaideep Choudhary had submitted a written letter to the police demanding legal action against policemen who entered the university campus without the permission of the VC. Chavda, in a statement to the media on Tuesday, also claimed that the police should have taken permission before entering the premises.
However, as more information is coming out, the top officials of the university are realizing that they were kept in the dark about many things. Chavda claimed that the Garba event was organized for the hostel students, but preliminary police investigation revealed that most of the participants were from outside the campus. Most of the people who protested at Umra police station on Monday night were neither residents of VNSGU hostel nor its students.
Questions are also being raised about who paid for the hi-tech sound system and light decorations, which were attended by more than 600 people.
The ABVP claimed that some drunken policemen misbehaved with the students and tried to crush them under their vehicle at the venue. But the team that reached the venue first included a woman police sub-inspector.
In a viral video, she is seen calmly explaining the rules to the students along with other policemen.
