According to netizens, praising a white woman for wearing a scarf on her head is considered ‘hypocritical’, while Muslim women in the country are harassed for doing so.

Vogue France, the French edition of fashion magazine, has been embroiled in controversy after it praised actress Julia Fox for wearing a headscarf. Fox was recently spotted at Paris Men’s Fashion Week topped in a leather Balenciaga trench coat, a pair of sunglasses and a headscarf. Sharing a picture of Fox in this outfit on their social media handle, Vogue France was the first to caption it, “Yeah to the headscarf! Swipe through for their recap of the Julia Fox and Kanye West style journey at the Haute Couture show in Paris this week. The caption was later edited to remove any reference to the headscarf but the damage was already done.

Vogue’s thumbs up to the headscarf upset a lot of netizens as they felt it was insensitive to the plight of Muslim women in a country that has been accused of perpetuating a culture of Islamophobia. According to netizens, praising a white woman for wearing a scarf on her head is considered ‘hypocritical’, while Muslim women in the country are harassed for doing so.

According to a report in The Independent, since 1989, when three students in Krell were suspended from school for refusing to remove the scarves on their heads, the freedom of Muslim women to wear the hijab has been a source of struggle. At least 100 girls have since been punished or thrown out of school because they wore headscarves to class. In about half of these cases the exclusions were overturned by the French courts. In 2011, the country made it illegal to wear face coverings such as the niqab and burqa. According to the Independent, the French Senate earlier this month decided to ban the wearing of “religious insignia” at sporting tournaments, including the hijab.

Angry netizens on social media attacked Vogue France in the comments section. A user asked the magazine to stand up to the government banning the hijab, instead showing a white woman wearing a headscarf. Another user called the magazine for its ‘double standards’ and asked what it was doing to promote the rights of Muslim women.

“How can you post about a headscarf on a white woman, but is it banned for Muslim women in your country?” Read another comment. Another pointed out that it is objectionable when Muslim women wear it but becomes ‘fashionable’ when models and celebrities wear it.
