Want to be healthy but have a desk job? 5 quick and easy ways to stay fit

Despite knowing that sitting in a particular position all day can affect our health, most of us do nothing about it. Getting regular vigorous exercise is no easy task, but even if you’re doing your part at work, the sad news is that prolonged sitting can be dangerous to your health.

Not all jobs allow you to take frequent breaks and stay fit, so you’ll need to ensure your fitness by finding ways to stay healthy and active while at work.

Here are 5 ways you can stay healthy and fit at work:

1. Stretching at the Desk

Stretching is a type of movement that improves joint control and range of motion. Additionally, it’s a great way to stay active and remind your muscles that they need to perform their duties, especially when it comes to postural support and control.

2. Move Actively

If you drive to work, make sure you walk to your workplace and take the stairs instead. Stairs are a great way to burn calories for free! Climbing stairs can also help increase your stamina, endurance and strengthen your leg muscles.

3. Stand whenever possible

Stand when participating in phone calls or discussing matters with co-workers, if possible make it a walk-and-talk meeting.

4. Make the Most of Your Break

Get out of your office on break and walk to the nearest tea stall or for a small snack.

5. Maintain Your Posture

Sitting in an upright chair for the whole day or part of the day will essentially help you burn calories by engaging your core, back and shoulder muscles and encourage you to constantly shift your body .

Lastly, this shouldn’t be hard but it gets awkward- drink water! Keep in mind that drinking more water also means you have to get up more often to go to the washroom which can help keep you going throughout the day.

Finding time to exercise in the morning may not be possible for everyone, so the least we can do is be active during work hours to counter the ill effects of sitting all day.

With a little effort, you can keep your body moving and your mind sharp throughout the day.
