Watch: Water leaks at Bengaluru Airport Terminal 2 amid rains

The newly constructed Terminal-2 of Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru started leaking due to heavy rains. Videos and pictures of water pooling on the floor of the new terminal have surfaced online and are drawing strong reactions from social media users. After the incident went viral, Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) issued a statement addressing the situation.

In a statement, a Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) spokesperson said, “Due to heavy rains on the evening of May 2, 2023, leakage occurred at the side of Terminal 2 of Bengaluru Airport.”

It further said, “We acknowledge that a large and new infrastructure like T2 will have teething problems, which we are addressing. Our teams are being pressed into action to resolve all issues.” The spokesperson said that BIAL is committed to maintaining the highest standards of infrastructure and security at both its terminals.

The video shared online attracted the attention of Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, who sarcastically compared the airport with the “rain forests of the Amazon”. He further said that the new airport, built at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore, was “submerged under water” after the “first rain”.

Terminal-2 cost Rs 5,000 crore to build, and has 2,55,000 square meters of space designed to accommodate at least 25 million passengers per year. T2 is known as the “Terminal in the Garden” because of the wide variety of vegetation and trees that surround it. 180 rare plant species, over 3,600 additional plant species, 600 70-year-old trees, bamboo cover, 620 indigenous plants, 7,700 transplanted trees, 96 species of lotus, and much more are some of its many highlights.
