Recently, we found an old letter written by Amitabh Bachchan to both his daughters, especially Aaradhya in 2016. In the letter, she reminded both of her granddaughters of the related heritage they are carrying with them. The letter begins with, ‘My dearest’ Navya And Aaradhya… you both carry a very valuable legacy on your tender shoulders – Aaradhya, your great-grandfather’s legacy, Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan… and Navya, your great-grandfather’s legacy, Mr. H.P. Nanda…’ Further, giving words of encouragement to both of them, he wrote, ‘Both of your great-grandfathers brought fame, prestige and recognition to your current surnames! You both are Nanda or Bachchan, but you are also girls… women! And because you are a woman, people will impose their own thinking, their own limits on you. They will tell you how to dress, how to behave, who you can meet and where you can go. Don’t be in the shadow of people’s judgment. Make your own choice in the light of your intellect.’ He wrote in the end, ‘Aaradhya – till you see and understand this, I can’t be around. But I think what I am saying today will remain relevant. It can be a rough, tough world to be a woman. But I believe it is women like you who will change this. It couldn’t be easier, setting your own limits, making your own choices, rising above people’s judgment. But you!…you can set an example for women everywhere.
