World Breastfeeding Week celebrated

In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) organized a rally to create awareness about its importance for mother-child health.

Dean of the hospital D. Nehru flagged off the rally which included nurses and students of the medical college. Speaking at the event, he said that breastfeeding can strengthen the immune system and also protect children from various diseases.

“Breastfeeding enhances the bond between the mother and the child and it also has health benefits for the mother. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of developing breast cancer, diabetes, hypertension and postpartum depression in women,” said Dr Nehru.

District Governor R Raja Govindasamy, Rotary Club President S Ranjit Valliappan, Inner Wheel Club President K Sonam were among others present.

Meanwhile, Collector A Arun Thamburaj in Nagapattinam inaugurated an exhibition on breastfeeding and presented nutrition kits to mothers of children participating in the health children’s competition.

During the programme, Mr. Thamburaj explained how breast milk nourishes the baby and helps in brain development. He said that breast milk provides ideal nutrition for babies which is essential for at least six months. Complementary feeding can be started at six months and breastfeeding can be continued for two years, a press release said.
