The theme of this year’s World Digestive Health Day is ‘Prevention of Colorectal Cancer: Getting Back on Track’.

World Digestive Health Day is observed on 29 May to create awareness about digestive disorders and diseases, many of which are life-threatening. This day came into existence in 2004 on the 45th anniversary of World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) Foundation. The day aims to talk not only about the types of digestive issues but also their prevalence, diagnosis,
treatment, and prevention.

World Digestive Health Day: History

The WGO was celebrating its 45th Foundation Day on May 31, 2004, when it was decided that going forward, the day would be known as World Digestive Health Day (WDHD). The day also marks the start of a year long campaign by WGO aimed at public health awareness.

World Digestive Health Day: Significance

The WGO has 117 member committees around the world, contributing to the World Digestive Health Day initiative. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), several million people around the world are suffering from some or the other stomach related problem. WGO, through several scientific events, poster presentations, exhibitions and practical workshops, aims to create general awareness about how to deal with such stomach issues.

The theme of this year’s World Digestive Health Day is ‘Prevention of Colorectal Cancer: Getting Back on Track’. According to the WGO, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the world. The WGO has decided to raise awareness of the importance of the disease through awareness campaigns and annual public support. The organization will also shed light on ways to prevent CRC and techniques to reduce the risk of contracting it.
