People usually experience positive feelings after sexual activity. Nevertheless, there are people who report feelings of depression, anxiety, agitation, or aggression. This condition, known as post-coital dysphoria (PCD), is a rare psychiatric disorder that has been found to affect women more than men. As researchers work to uncover the underlying causes of PCD, the condition remains an intriguing and understudied aspect of human sexuality.

The causes of PCD are largely unknown, although experts suggest that a combination of psychological and affective factors may contribute to its manifestation. According to a 2015 study, PCD symptoms are common in the general population and can occur even in the presence of a physically satisfying sexual experience.

IVF specialist and gynecologist Dr. Yuvraj Jadeja recently took to Instagram to explain the possible causes of post-coital dysphoria and suggest ways to deal with it. She advises those feeling anxious after sex to focus on their breathing to slow their thoughts and name three things they visualize in front of them as ways to calm themselves down. Additionally, he encouraged individuals to ask themselves basic questions such as “Am I safe?” and “What do I need right now?”

For those whose partners may feel anxious after intercourse, Dr. Jadeja recommends meeting with them to see if they want to talk about it. Also, he said that it is very important to give them space when needed. He stressed the importance of following up with them afterward and told them that help is available whenever they are ready.

Therapy is another important resource for PCD. Talking to a certified professional about the experience may help to uncover the underlying causes of the condition. An appropriate form of therapy or a combination of drugs can help one have more fulfilling sexual encounters.

The lack of awareness and research on PCD poses a challenge to individuals experiencing the condition and highlights the need for more comprehensive studies on this phenomenon.
