In a podcast hosted by MIT computer scientist Lex Friedman, Zuckerberg said that when someone is in college the most important decision they can make is who they spend time with. “You become the people you surround yourself with,” he explained. Zuckerberg said in the interview, “I think maybe people too, in general, are purpose-focused, and maybe not focused enough on the connections and the people they’re basically building relationships with.”

Zuckerberg also said that he tries to prioritize relationships over objectives. When he’s evaluating a candidate for a job he doesn’t actually imagine being their boss, but what it would be like to work for that person. “I would hire someone to work for me only if I can see myself working for them,” he said.

The CEO of Meta went on to explain why he chose to do so. According to Zuckerberg, this strategy helps foster an environment that is more productive. Finding personal compatibility is important, Zuckerberg said, because goals are better achieved together if you’re working with people who share your values ​​on a human level.
