‘2,000 steps backward’: Why Malayalam show ‘Loud Speaker’ is facing backlash

‘Loud Speaker’, a Malayalam television show aired on Kairali TV, has recently come under criticism for derogatory remarks on photo shoots of Mollywood actresses. The show has two anchors who are analyzing the lives of the actors. In a recent episode, which has since been taken down from their YouTube channel, the hosts targeted popular stars Shreena, Esther Anil and Gopika Ramesh. Clips of the video have since gone viral on Instagram and are facing backlash. Shreeda, who played critically acclaimed roles in 1984, Parva and Kuruthi, criticized the channel in an Instagram post along with a picture from her latest photoshoot, which was dissolved in ‘loud speaker’. The post has since gone viral with several actors coming out in support of him. The show claimed it was “trying to compete with younger actors” with a “modern” photo shoot.

“When everyone is (almost well) trying to address toxic behavior patterns, stigma, and perceptions, fighting for women’s rights, and actively for everyone to love their bodies.” Creating a niche, sadly we are taking 20,000 steps back here.” Shreena said. She lambasted the show saying that it is 2021 and this ‘nonsense’ will no longer work. Stating that such ‘extremely backward’ ideas should be checked, he encouraged people to wear clothes of their choice and focus on their own business. “Here I am learning to love my body, and to express myself in my favorite form of art, fashion and cinema, and dear, I am learning to stop doing what I want for someone I love.” So no, I am never going to stop doing ‘photoshoots’. I will continue to do the service of looking like a queen.”

Esther Anil, who rose to fame as a child artiste with stellar performances in Drishyam 1 and 2, was shown ‘desperate to prove’ she has grown up to bag leading roles. She returned to the show, tagging its stars Sneha Sreekumar, Reshmi Anil and Albie Francis, saying that she had been trying to ignore the video for weeks and that ‘they are full of sh*t’. She shared a screenshot of a conversation with her father, which supported her ability to make independent choices.

Gopika Ramesh, in the opinion of the hosts, was trying to attract the attention of directors and producers with her ‘glamorous’ pictures.

Social commentators on Instagram slammed the show with posts in support of the trolled actors. Amalraj V Aanchal, who works in the film industry, pointed to the society’s ‘ethical policing syndrome’ and battalions of ‘online brethren’ waiting to pounce on women who do not follow their ideas of dressing or lifestyle. and offer unsolicited ‘advice’. He added in a conversation with News18, ‘personal liberty’ and ‘freedom to wear what you like’ are only a sprinkling of words in the show’s commentary, without making them understand the proper meaning of the words.

Micah Jomike, a popular digital creator on Instagram known as @micahwidmic who is known for his humorous take on the patriarchal mindset, told News18 that the shows will continue to spew sexist ideas as long as That there should be an audience to adopt it. “Movie formats have now changed to become more progressive. Society will remain regressive as long as these serials do not deny the consumption patterns of people who enjoy such content.”

Varsha Vijayan, a content producer, also agrees that such TV shows exist because producers know it is welcome. “We have been conditioned to believe in gender roles and something that women can or should do. When women do what is normal, but not within the realm of ‘gender roles,’ their ‘feminine or Criticized for not being ‘feminine’. These shows play a huge role in victim blaming and shaming, promoting pre-existing toxic beliefs and normalizing such behaviour.”

While one user, @Fash.ionista331 commented that ‘It is very disappointing to see such shows on national television.. even if 2% of the society watches it..it would be enough to pollute our society. …ridiculous idea’, another @akshay._.kumar_ said ‘I thought he was speaking…boomer…I thought it was script…it’s intentional…isn’t it? ??’

Sneha and Reshmi, who play the two lead roles in the show, issued a statement on Sunday clarifying that they are independent entities and do not subscribe to the views of the characters. The characters represent people who post lewd comments and spread gossip under the pictures of actresses. Sneha wrote in her post, “Only part of the video is being circulated on social media. If people attempted to watch the entire episode, they would realize that the voiceover ends with a statement that it was a person decides whether he wears the outfit of his choice and posts it online. I am sorry that this video has hurt people intentionally or unintentionally.”

Recently, the jury of the Kerala State Television Awards created a stir when none of the TV serials were found worthy of the award and instead, expressed concern over the regressive portrayal of women. Since these TV shows are watched by family audiences, he stressed on the need to be more responsible with the content.
