The 18-year-old Argentine has scored five goals and made four assists this season. Garnacho made his return from an ankle injury, coming off the bench, to score in extra time and seal a 2–0 win over Wolverhampton.

Manager Erik ten Haag said Manchester United’s Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho should push for a starting spot after an impressive debut season in the Premier League in which the 18-year-old scored five goals.

Garnacho, who also had four assists, made his return from an ankle injury coming off the bench to score in extra time in a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

He came in and did almost everything well and scored a great goal which will give him confidence. It’s good for us for the rest of the season that he is back and can make an impact.

“I’m pleased we can bring in young players and hope he progresses quickly enough to compete for a starting position. Because that’s his next challenge.”

When asked what Garnacho needed to do to start for United, Ten Haag said, “Decision making, being aware, scanning situations, when to do one-on-ones, getting behind, getting on target.” When to go for or make an additional pass?

“Decisions like that make a good player a top player – that’s the difference. But when you look at it as a whole, he’s a huge talent and very brave.”

Ten Haag said the way into the starting line-up was open for youngsters such as Garnacho, who signed a new deal to stay at United until 2028.

“But, in the end, it’s about the player – he has to invest and have a plan to do it,” said the manager.
