The Traffic Police Department in Shillong has taken the initiative and will be fined up to ₹300 on offenders if they are caught misusing or using a hazard light. Now a step has been taken in the right direction to encourage the use of hazard lights and alert fellow drivers. Having said that, people should also be educated about the correct use of hazard lights as it is not limited to turn indicators, which are applied while taking turns.

However, some people turn on their hazard lights at crossings to indicate they want to go straight or when it starts pouring. The hazard light should also be turned on if you suddenly stop in a dangerous situation that people usually don’t obey. Under section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, drivers who use their hazard lights improperly can be fined. Therefore, a fine under the Motor Vehicles Act can be imposed on anyone wrongly using a hazard light on any road in India and not just those driving in Shillong.
