The Ganeshotsav, which began on September 10, will continue till 21. During this 11-day festival, people especially in Maharashtra observe Gauri Puja, which is a three-day festival. Every year, it occurs on the fourth or fifth day after Ganesh Chaturthi. This year the festival will start from 13th September.

Jyeshtha Gauri Avahan and Mangala Gauri Vrat are other names for Gauri Puja. This puja is performed by the devotees of Gauri and Mahalakshmi when Anuradha Nakshatra begins during the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month of the Hindu calendar. According to Hindu mythology, it is said that Goddess Sita performed Gauri Puja to have Lord Rama as her husband.

Worship and Rituals

On this day women observe a fast and pray for the well being of their husbands. The reception, or invocation, is a separate event. Women bring the idol of the goddess, and their footsteps are imprinted as soon as they enter the house. The women of the house wear jewelery and new saris. Unmarried women pray to Goddess Parvati to get suitable life partner. It is said that Goddess Parvati fulfills all the wishes of her worshippers.

Importance of Gauri Puja

Goddess Gauri is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, the mother of Lord Ganesha. According to a legend, Goddess Gauri visits the house of worshipers to find Lord Ganesha, who stays at her devotees’ house during Ganeshotsav. Wealth comes in the house of the people whose house Goddess Gauri visits. Even if a person does not have an idol of Ganapati, the twin idols of Gauri and Ganesha are worshiped on this day.
