“Wild dog on a bone”: Kim Jong Un’s sister hits out at South Korea, allies

The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has branded South Korea’s president and government a “fool” and the United States a “loyal dog”, state media reported on Thursday.

Kim Yo Jong’s vitriol follows Seoul this week saying it was considering unilateral sanctions on the North over recent missile tests, including an intercontinental ballistic missile launch last week.

“This despicable act shows more clearly that the South Korean group is a ‘loyal dog’ and a puppet of the US,” Kim said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

“I wonder what South Korean group, no more than a wild dog running on a bone given to it by the US, brazenly imposes sanctions on the DPRK,” she said, using an abbreviated form of the North’s official name. “What a spectacle!”

Pyongyang always refers to South Korea with a lowercase “s”, a clear sign of disrespect.

Kim accused South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol of creating a “dangerous situation” and compared him to his more dovish predecessor Moon Jae-in, under whom, he said, Seoul was “not our target”.

“I wonder why the South Korean people still remain a passive spectator to such acts by the ‘government’ of Yoon Suk Yeol and other idiots,” she said.

Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, said North Korea issues statements before provocations, adding: “There may soon be an armed demonstration against South Korea and the United States.”

Friday’s ICBM launch was the latest in a recent record-breaking blitz of Pyongyang launches, and officials and analysts in Seoul and Washington have warned they could end in a seventh nuclear test.

North Korea has a long history of colorful personal attacks against foreign leaders, and analysts have often noted the country’s failure to use “diplomatic language”.

“Basically, they can’t speak well of countries they consider enemies,” said Go Myeong-hyun, a researcher at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies.

Before US President Joe Biden was nominated as a candidate, Pyongyang called him “a rabid dog” who should be “beaten to death with a stick” and famously described his predecessor Donald Trump as “psychologically insane”. referred to as the “deranged US dotard”.
